X Shadowban: How to Check If Your Posts Are Hidden
Your last post got almost no views. The one before it did fine. Nothing changed on your side, so one word shows up in your head: X shadowban.
I want to save you the panic. X has no button called shadowban. It does have ways to quietly limit who sees you, and it will show you some of them if you look in the right place.
The word X refuses to use
Search the X help pages for "shadowban" and you get nothing. The company talks about reach, and about which posts are eligible to be recommended. The effect on you is the same. The name is different.
That matters for a practical reason. You cannot fix a problem using a word the platform does not track. So stop hunting for the ban and start checking the two things X will actually tell you.
The X shadowban check that takes two minutes
Open your X settings. Go to Your account, then Account status.
That page tells you if X has put a restriction or a label on your account. If something is wrong, you can appeal from the same page. If it says your account is fine, believe it and move on.
Most people never open this page. They read one scary thread, delete three good posts, and change nothing that mattered.
Now log out and look at yourself
Account status covers the loud restrictions. The quiet ones show up in search.
Open a private browser window so you are not logged in. Then do three things:
- Search your exact handle. Your profile should be the first result.
- Search a short phrase from a post you published today. The post should appear.
- Open a big account's post that you replied to. Look for your reply without expanding anything.
If your handle does not come up when you are logged out, that is a real signal. If everything appears, your posts are visible and what you have is a reach problem.
Those are two different problems with two different fixes. Hold on to that before you rebuild your whole strategy.
Why the free checker tools keep lying to you
There is no official shadowban status stored anywhere in X. Third party checkers cannot read one, because one does not exist. They run searches, look at what comes back, and guess.
Sometimes the guess is right. Often it is a stale search result or a rate limit, and the tool puts a red mark next to your name for no reason. Then you spend a week fixing an account that was never broken. The logged out test is the same method with none of the guessing, and it costs you two minutes.
Six habits that cut your reach on purpose
X limits distribution for behaviour that looks automated or desperate. The common ones:
- Raw links in almost every post. Links on X: Share Without Killing Your Reach covers the way around it.
- Asking for the engagement. "Follow me", "repost this", "comment YES below" all read as bait.
- The same text posted again and again, especially from a tool.
- Following and unfollowing in bulk to farm follow backs.
- Empty replies. "Great post" a hundred times a day looks like a bot, because bots do exactly that.
- Getting blocked or muted a lot right after a post goes wide.
None of these send you a warning. They just make your next post land softer.
Replies are still the fastest way to grow, so the answer is better replies, not fewer of them. PostOwl has a Chrome extension for this: it drafts a reply in your own voice while you are sitting on the post, so you can send something real in a few seconds instead of typing "this".
If the page says you are restricted
Read the label before you appeal. X names the reason, and the reason usually points straight at the fix.
Most labels come from one post, not from your whole account. Find that post. Delete it if it broke a rule. Then appeal in plain language: one short paragraph, what happened, what you changed. Skip the anger, it does not help your case.
Appeals get reviewed by people, and reviews take time. Keep posting normally while you wait. Going silent does not speed anything up.
The unglamorous fix
If your account status is clean and the logged out test passes, run this for seven days:
Post once or twice a day, spread across the day. Write replies that say something a person would say. Drop the links for a week. Cut the engagement bait completely.
Then check your analytics instead of your feelings. Impressions and profile visits move first. Followers move last. X Analytics: The Numbers That Predict Growth shows which numbers are worth watching.
Spacing posts out is the part people get wrong. They batch everything on Sunday, then dump six posts in one hour. PostOwl spreads them across the week and writes them in your voice, because it learns from posts you already wrote. Same work for you, far less bot signal.
Sometimes it was never a ban
A quiet week is normal. Reach on X moves with your topic, the hour you posted, and whatever else is loud that day. One flat post proves nothing. Five flat weeks is a pattern.
If your whole account slowed down at once, the cause is usually bigger than you. X Algorithm 2026: Why Impressions Dropped & The Fix goes through what changed.
Do this today
Open Account status. Run the logged out search on your handle. In two minutes you will know whether you have a real restriction or just a slow week, and you will stop deleting posts that were working fine.
