X DMs: The Follow-Up That Grows Your Network
You reply to the right people on X. Your comment gets a like, maybe a follow. Then it stops there.
The next step almost nobody takes is an X DM.
X DMs are the quiet way to turn a stranger into a real contact. Not a pitch. A short message that continues a talk you already started. Most people skip it because they think a DM has to sell something. It does not.
Here is how to use X DMs to grow without feeling like a spammer.
Why the X DM is the missing step
A public reply gets you seen. A good reply might get you a follow. But a follow is weak. People follow hundreds of accounts and forget most of them.
A DM is different. It lands in one person's inbox. It feels personal. And it starts a two way talk, not a broadcast.
Think about your own follows. The accounts you actually remember are the ones you have talked to. That is what a DM does. It changes you from an account they saw into a person they know.
If you already reply well, replies to big accounts are your warm-up. The DM is the follow through.
Can you even DM someone who does not follow you?
Yes, most of the time.
X has two DM settings. Some people allow messages from everyone. If they do, your message lands in their inbox or their Requests folder. Others only accept DMs from people they follow. If you are not followed back, your message waits in their Requests folder until they open it.
So a DM to a non-follower is not blocked. It just needs them to open Requests. Many active users check that folder. A short, clear first line helps you get past the filter.
One note. Free accounts have a daily cap on how many DMs they can send. X lists it at 500 per day. You will never hit that with real, one to one messages. You will hit it fast if you blast copy paste spam. So do not.
What to actually say
The best first DM is short and about them, not you.
Start with the thing you were already talking about in the replies. Reference their post. Ask one real question or share one useful thing. Then stop.
A simple shape that works:
- One line that shows you read their stuff
- One line of value or a real question
- No link, no pitch, no meeting invite
Here is a weak DM: "Hey, love your content! I help founders grow on X, want to chat?" That is a pitch wearing a smile. Delete it.
Here is a better one: "Your thread on cold email hooks changed how I write mine. Do you test subject lines the same way inside DMs?"
See the difference? The second one talks about them. It gives them an easy reason to reply.
Turn replies into X DMs, not the other way around
Do not open with a DM to a cold stranger. Reply first.
Spend a week leaving sharp replies on someone's posts. Be useful in public. Then the DM feels like a natural next step, because it is. They have already seen your name three times.
This is the same idea behind the reply guy method, carried one step further. Public replies build the memory. The DM starts the relationship.
Keep the door open
Not every DM turns into something today. That is fine.
Some of my best contacts came from a DM that got a two word answer, then went quiet for a month, then came back to life when I shared a useful link. Slow is normal.
So do not chase. If someone does not reply, leave it. Keep showing up in their replies. The next DM will land better because you kept being useful.
And when they do reply, keep it human. Ask about their work. Send them a thing that helps. Trade ideas. The follows and the intros come later, on their own.
Where PostOwl fits
Doing this by hand takes time. You have to read the post, write a reply that sounds like you, and keep track of who you talked to.
PostOwl learns your voice from posts you already wrote, so your replies still sound like you and not a robot. Its Chrome extension lets you send a quick reply right from the post you are reading, so the public part stays fast. That frees your time for the DMs, which are the part a tool should never fully write for you.
The one thing to try this week
Pick three accounts you respect. Reply to their posts every day for five days. On day six, send one short DM to each that talks about them.
That is it. Three DMs, built on a week of real replies.
Do that for a month and you will have a small group of real contacts on X. Not followers who forget you. People who know your name.
